ROCKET ENGINEER

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and forward-thinking engineering student to help design, build and test experimental sounding rockets in preparation for international competitions. As part of a diverse and sociable team, you will have shared responsibilities in ensuring the safety and success of the mission by working contentiously, passionately and relentlessly. Drawing on your experiences of component and systems design you will strive to create a rocket capable of achieving a 10,000ft apogee in accordance with competition rules.   

A technically capable team player will find this opportunity an exciting endeavour in applying their expertise and knowledge to real-life situations where they can develop new skills and gain a deeper insight into the aerospace industry.

SOFTWARE ENGINEER

A rare opportunity for an enthusiastic developer to contribute to visionary, new projects such as developing our in-flight mission control software and creating and maintaining a brand-new research management package for current and future rocket designs. 

Drawing on experience of web design and/or full stack development, you will work with both front-end and back-end systems to design and release various applications and systems to be used during our mission. In this role you will gain unparalleled practical experience; taking ownership of designing and constructing software to be used for years to come.

Strategy and relations specialist

A people-person to the highest degree, you will have a zest for life and coordinating events to engage, entertain and inspire members of the team and the public. We are looking for an excellent communicator capable of building relationships across the University campus and beyond. A goal-oriented self-starter who has the capacity to formulate their ideas, as well as execute them, will have the opportunity to practise their coordination of large events, capitalising on their resourcefulness and creativity. Social media guru

We’re seeking an imaginative and explorative designer with an eye for creating beautiful and purposeful posts for our range of social media outlets. Responsible for LURA’s online presence; this elegant communicator will be driven to influence peers and the wider public, generating far-reaching support for our mission with the aims of boosting morale and attracting sponsors. 

Applicants should be prepared to analyse user data with the goal of devising a long-term social media and outreach strategy. The successful candidate should be passionate about creating a popular and inspiring brand and understand the importance of image in business. An articulate and communicative writer will combine their digital media skills with deliberate scripts to motivate and engage the public.

We’re looking for an experienced designer to collaborate with our Social Media Department and wider team to create beautiful, engaging, and inspiring content for our media outlets and public events. Successful applicants will gain the opportunity to work on a wide range of media, from logos to Instagram posts to our unique mission insignias. You will also be responsible for the design of our uniform and merchandise which will attract new supporters and help showcase our team’s image on an international stage. At an organisation where self-starting and visionary ideas are the norm, your work will reflect your ambitious nature and drive to go further and will form LURA’s representation for years to come.

Working together, our five technical team leaders are responsible for the design and manufacture of our rockets. 

Each leader will be accountable for designing and manufacturing their individual rocket system, from drawing board to launchpad.

This position is demanding but extremely rewarding and is the perfect opportunity to apply knowledge learnt on your course whilst learning a wide range of new skills and gaining invaluable leadership experience.

Chief Operating Officer (COO)

BUSINESS

Our Chief Operating Officer is LURA’s second most senior position, after Director, and is responsible for day-to-day operations: logistics, recruitment, staff welfare and funding.

They will directly lead our Business Team and work closely with our Head of Marketing to manage LURA’s brand and professional image. Successful applicants will gain unparalleled leadership experience and develop a wide and highly applicable skillset in project management, business development and logistics to name a few.

We are looking for a confident, motivated leader who will help drive the team from strength to strength.

Head of Marketing

MARKETING

Our Head of Marketing will run our Marketing team, responsible for building LURA’s branding, running our website and social media pages, and dealing with the press, both within and beyond the University.

This role is suited for a creative looking to build their CV by developing invaluable leadership experience and learning highly applicable skills in running a team.

In this crucial early stage of our development, we need a confident, charismatic creator who will help put LURA on the map.

Our Team Member Application Process

  1. The APPLY button under each job description will take you to a Google Form. Upon completion you will be given a link for our Online Assessment Centre.

     

  2. Our Assessment Centre consists of several stages testing a range of skills and we recommend you complete them on a laptop or desktop computer. All candidates will be required to submit a CV and answer two written questions. Those applying for engineering roles will also need to sit logical reasoning and numerical reasoning assessments.

     

  3. Once you’ve completed all the assessments, submit your application using the red box at the bottom of the Assessment Centre homepage. (We won’t be able to see your application until you submit it!)
     
  4. That’s it! Your application will be assessed against other candidates, and we will email you to let you know whether you’ve been successful or not. If you’re successful we will hang onto your application and one of our team leaders will call you in for a quick interview once we have a spot for you on the team. 

Frequently Asked Questions

The experience we list is recommended but not mandatory. As long as you have a passion for problem solving and a hunger for learning new skills, you should still apply. 

Unfortunately we require you be at the University of Leeds next year if you are applying for a team leader position due to the workload and the physical commitments required of that role. If you are on placement next year, we would still urge you to apply for a team member position when they become available. We cannot guarantee that you will be accepted but we will decide on a case-by-case basis depending on your working circumstances next year.
