LURA Chosen For 2022 Spaceport America Cup

Monday the 25th of October brought incredible news for the LURA family, as we were selected as one of just four UK teams to compete in the world’s most prestigious rocket engineering competition, the Spaceport America Cup. It’s official: Leeds’ first-ever student-built rocket, the Gryphon I, will be lifting off from the New Mexico desert in just eight months’ time. Months of hard work and relentless commitment have finally started to pay off.

With our place at the competition now confirmed, it is more crucial than ever that we can raise the necessary funds. Throughout October, our team have taken on the challenge of collectively walking and running the distance from the University of Leeds to the Spaceport America – an incredible 8014km! With every step of the way, we have been raising funds for our mission through Crowdfunder and even put together a whole collection of rewards to show our gratitude for our supporters. If you haven’t already, please check out our fundraiser page and, if you’re in a position to do so, leave a donation to help us out. Crowdfunder.co.uk/leedsrocketry

To celebrate this huge achievement, the team headed out into the city on Tuesday night accompanied by our friends and supporters. Everyone had a great time hopping from bar to bar, letting off steam, and celebrating our big moment. Our passion for the mission has never been so strong, and the support flooding in from our supporters across the university and beyond has been a huge morale boost for the team. Stay tuned – great things are coming…
